Design - EDM Division

A-Systems Engineering Design and Manufacturing Division designs approximately one-half of the products we manufacture. The balance of the designs are supplied by our customers. Our designs range in complexity from microprocessor controls for machines and instruments to power supplies for a variety of products. We develop hardware and software related products to meet our customer’s specific requirements.

We will take a design or an idea and produce a final product including all steps in-between from sourcing of parts and materials through in-process inspection and test to final performance testing, packing and shipment.

We can source parts as identified by the customer or draw on our inventory of standardized parts and broad base of qualified suppliers for everything from printed circuit boards to sheet metal, from injection molded parts to custom integrated circuits. A major factor in our design of products is the produce ability of that product in the future. Currently many parts are being obsoleted on a daily basis. For example approximately 100 active component types are being obsoleted every day. Unless the engineers who design your product consider the future availability of the component parts they select you could be left with a design which is not producible in the near future. Obviously this is an important factor if the new product design has a long anticipated live span.

Often, customers come to us with a design containing obsolete components. In these cases we will develop replacements for any passive components which are not available. We also work closely with our sister division, A-Systems Semiconductor Division, to develop replacements for active components which are no longer available.

We apply innovative concepts in the application of techniques and technology to meet your requirements. A patent application by one of our Engineers resulted from applying an opto coupler, designed for punch card detection, to the task of reliably detecting the presence of a human finger for activating a machine. We apply ZERO MASS designs; whenever possible, to minimize bracketry and mounting hardware.

Many of our products utilize microprocessors, ASICs, FPGAs and other programmable integrated circuits which permit us to utilize the latest technologies to create products which do not have built-in obsolescence. Often, a new version of the product is as simple as revising the software to offer new functions or improved performance. We develop the software and the hardware to meet our customer’s needs.

Often, we utilize standard personal computers to accomplish complex tasks by combining off-the-shelf hardware and software plus custom hardware and software as required. This saves time and costs in bringing the new product to market and permits easily updating the product as computer technology advances.

We can start from a design sketched on the back of an envelope or a description of the problem to be solved. We can "clone" an existing design which is no longer available or which can no longer be procured and competitively from high volume assembly houses. We offer complete documentation packages if when required. We will design the test fixtures and the test procedures for insuring that the product meets the requirements of the customer. All of our designs are stored electronically to insure future availability of the information.
